Before we get to the main sugary event, we’ll kick things off with some more traditional portraits. This lets your baby get warmed up and comfortable in front of the camera. We’ll grab some nice family shots of everyone all dressed up and looking picture-perfect.
Then it’s just your adorable birthday kiddo front and center! I’ll have them all dolled up in a super cute outfit, catching all their natural baby smiles and curious expressions. Getting those classic portraits captured first ensures we have a nice variety for your gallery.
The Main Event – All About That Cake!
Once your baby is feeling like a total superstar, it’s time for the cake smash grand finale! I’ll bring out their very own personal cake, baked fresh and decorated specially for them. We can put their name on it, their age, fun-themed decorations – whatever fits their sweet little personality.
This is always the big showstopper moment. You can see the wonder and excitement wash over their little face as they lock eyes on that glorious tower of frosting just for them. Then it’s on from there – organized chaos and sugary bliss! They’ll tentatively poke at it at first, giving it a few licks and getting that first taste of sweet deliciousness. Before you know it, they’ll be grabbing enthusiastic handfuls and smearing frosting absolutely everywhere. Some babies are shy about the whole thing, and some dive in face first without hesitation!
No matter their approach, it’s guaranteed to be a hilarious, messy experience. I’ve seen it all – adorable looks of sheer focus and determination as they dismantle the cake, frosting mohawks, rainbow hands and faces. My personal favorite is when they discover new textures and can’t resist the urge to slam their tiny palms into the gooey mess. So much joy and silliness!
Don’t Worry, We’re Prepared for the Mess!
My studio is 100% set up to comfortably contain the sweet destruction. We’ll have protective coverings everywhere and plenty of wipes and washcloths on hand for quick cleanup once we’re done. Some parents opt to have their baby just wear a diaper cover to make cleaning up that much easier. Although I do love the contrast of a dapper birthday suit getting progressively more icing-stained!
During the smash, I’ll encourage you to feel free to get in on the cake fun too if you’d like. Having pictures of parents being goofy and playful with their kiddo can be such funny and memorable shots. Or if you’d prefer staying clean, you can cheer them on from the sidelines while I go full steam with the camera. Totally whatever your comfort level is!
